About Us - Precision Paralegal

About Precision Paralegal Services

Precision Paralegal Services has been representing clients in the Ontario & Alberta for over 23 years, and have completed over 20,000 Small Claims Court room hours. Our team of paralegals represent individuals, small businesses, corporations, finance companies and insurance companies in Small Claims Court, Landlord / Tenant, Highway Traffic Act or Provincial Offenses Act matters.

Precision Paralegal has grown to be one of the largest Small Claims Court focused paralegal firms in Canada. Our team consists of some of the leading paralegals in the country with our president, Michelle Haigh, being awarded the William J. Simpson Distinguished Paralegal Award in 2020.

While Precision Paralegal typically assists our clients with the entire Ontario and Alberta Small Claims Court, Landlord / Tenant, Highway Traffic Act, or Provincial Offenses Act process, Precision Paralegal can help you with just a portion of the process. From sending a demand letter to defending you at trial, we are here to support you every step of the way.

We believe that using a paralegal firm should be cost-effective and significantly less expensive than using a traditional law firm. Our paralegals charge between $125.00 – $295.00 per hour as opposed to lawyers who can charge upwards of $500.00 per hour. Additionally, to keep costs low we utilize our administrative staff wherever possible who bill at $75.00 per hour.

We have offices located in Ontario (Burlington – Head Office, Toronto Orangeville), Alberta (Edmonton and Calgary), and Vancouver. Complementary to in-person meetings, we utilize web conferencing to communicate with our clients.

We also utilize a state of the art practice management system that will securely allow you to interact with the Precision Paralegal team and view your matters status, documents, and account online at any time.

Small Claims Experience Counts

Michelle Haigh - Small Claims Court Expert

We understand that experience counts and having a strong, experienced and knowledgeable legal representative will assist you in a successful Small Claims Court result. This is why Michelle Haigh oversees all legal files that are represented by Precision Paralegal Services. Michelle Haigh, Licensed Paralegal and president of Precision Paralegal, was the longest running Paralegal Bencher at the Law Society of Ontario (the regulating body for all 6000+ paralegals). She is the only Paralegal Bencher that has been on the Paralegal Standing Committee from the inception of Paralegal Regulation and was the committees chair from April 2015-2018. She also is the only paralegal ever to represent the Law Society of Ontario at the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Michelle was instrumental in building the process around regulating paralegals, developing the Professional Code of Conduct and the discipline process. Michelle also sat as a Director on the board at Legal Aid Ontario and is currently focused on how the legal industry can utilize paralegals better, especially in under serviced areas that create access to justice issues.

Precision Paralegal is different than traditional law firms because we can assist clients with their Small Claims Court, Landlord / Tenant, Highway Traffic Act or Provincial Offenses Act matter at competitive rates and alternative fee structures. The hourly rates that are charged by law firms usually don’t justify using their services to collect a debt through the Ontario and Alberta Small Claims Courts. In Ontario Small Claims Court you are able to commence an action up to $35,000.00 and in Alberta Small Claims Court you are able to commence an action up to $50,000.00.

Helping you Navigate Small Claims Court

Prior to taking any action on our clients file, we make a legal assessment to determine if the matter should in fact proceed legally in Ontario or Alberta Small Claims Courts. Sometimes legal action is not the proper or most cost effective recourse. We then provide our clients with our recommendation on how to move forward. If legal action is determined to be an effective recourse, we follow a strict process that is customized for Ontario and Alberta Small Claims Courts. Our process starts with a demand letter and verbal contact with the debtor or opposing party. We always try resolve the matter prior to proceeding with legal action. If the debt cannot be collected or the dispute cannot be resolved, we prepare and process a claim against the debtor and follow the matter through to judgment, including attendance at settlement conferences and trials if required. Once judgment is received the hard part begins – collecting your money. We have extensive experience in locating assets and being able to collect debts post judgment by way of garnishment, writs and examinations.
